Australian Mail Contractors Leading The Switch To Electric
Electric two-wheelers are starting to appear in all corners of Australia. Licensees and Mail Contractors are leading the way, with vehicles from Benzina Zero.
Benzina Zero is Australia’s leading e-mobility business. Based in Brisbane, it provides a range of high-quality e-scooters, e-bikes and e-mopeds/motorcycles. Their vehicles are now trusted to get the job done across Australia by large corporations including Domino's, Pizza Hut and now LPOs and Mail Contractors.
In April 2024, David Freeman, who owns Longreach LPO as well as holding the local mail contract, became Australia’s first Mail Contractor to make the shift and electrify his two-wheel fleet after years of using petrol brands like Kymco and others.
When David first saw the Duo’s unique robust twin tubular frame design he was hooked. “It was the practicality and the simplicity of this design that grabbed my attention! There is no other scooter/motorbike on the market that has this level of carrying capacity, far more than any other two-wheelers I have used, and as we are carrying more parcels today the Duo will bolster and streamline our delivery capacity. The Duo is super rugged, no plastic body panels to damage and when we get to end-of-life there is less to recycle.”
“We look forward to using the Duo’s in Longreach's mail run as we can operate these vehicles on a car licence. We also purchased extra batteries so we can charge them from our solar system at our post office. The benefits, low running costs and reduced ongoing servicing requirements compared to my old bikes, mean the Duo is very cost-effective, plus they look amazing”.
“I have already spoken with other mail contractors who are looking to make the switch, and the Duo is the perfect replacement for their petrol two-wheelers,” said David.
Benzina Zero has developed a fitting system to allow a simple installation process to utilise the existing panniers and top box from the Honda bikes, allowing LPOs and Mail Contractors to continue to use proven and tested AP equipment to keep changeover costs to a minimum. Contractors can choose from a range of additional accessories, including upgraded comfort folding footrests, a phone holder, and the rack adapter mount for panniers and top box, which fits both Duo (50km/h) & Duo+ (65km/h) versions. Letter sorting bags are also able and mounted to the handlebars, plus optional additional storage on the front of the bike which has not been available before.
Since David took his first Duo’s, many more Benzina Zero Duo’s are now delivering mail around the country, from Clermont in Central Queensland to Hillston in Central New South Wales, Iluka on the East Coast and all the way to Mount Barker in far south of Western Australia.
By switching to electric you will benefit from reduced running costs and less frequent servicing – a real bonus in some rural and remote areas where finding a motorcycle mechanic can be a challenge at times.
“We have seen amazing results from the first movers who have purchased Duo and Duo+ models to trial in their mail runs. It is a privilege to support Licensees and Mail Contractors who perform such a vital service to the Australian community every single day”, said Ben Silver, Chief Plugger Inner at Benzina Zero.
With the ability to “swap and go” with the standard removable batteries and the development of a “range extender” battery under way even longer runs become open to the benefits of electric.
Benzina Zero have also developed a national fleet pricing program for LPOs and Mail Contractors.
“If you have been considering the switch to electric, want to save on servicing and running costs or just want alternative to your aging postie bike, you won’t regret it,” said Benzina Zero’s Ben Silver
